Operation.
Below is a curated selection of information regarding the usage of the VoiSona editor and voice libraries that we feel to be extremely useful to a user new to the software. For further reading, please see the official VoiSona manual.

:: Importing & Exporting Files.
VoiSona has 3 native file formats – .tssln, .tssprj and .tsmsln – and is able to import a variety of file types including .midi and .musicxml. However, when moving between different versions of the application or other vocal synthesiser programs, there can sometimes be easier ways to navigate that switch.

:: Voice Parameters.
In VoiSona, most parameters are controlled by directly drawing in each specified windows. Multiple parameters can be viewed at the same time by selecting the eye icon of one while being on the tab of another. To access editing, be sure either the “Draw Tool” or the “Line Tool” are selected.
Note.

The piano roll where melody and lyric edits are made. Articulation and singing expression edits can also be made here by either selecting notes and accessing the “Property” menu by pressing the wrench icon, or right clicking the note and accessing the drop down menu.
Singing Style.

One of the options found under the “Global Parameters” menu, supported voice libraries contain multiple singing styles that can be blended together. These styles affect the pitch, timbre, pronunciation and singing expressions.
Timing.

Once lyric and phonetic adjustments have been made in the “Note” menu, the timing can be adjusted here. Click and drag to move each phoneme exactly where you wish. For automatic precise vowel timing, select the desired notes and right click to find “Vowel Timing Correction” in the menu.
Volume.

Measured in decibels (dB), both the volume of each note and breaths are displayed here. Use the tools to adjust the performance of the vocalist to your liking; for example, drawing a crescendo onto a long note or turning a breath down for a more intense effect.
Pitch & Tune.

Measured in hertz (Hz), this parameter displays the generated pitch of the vocalist. This is affected by each vocalist’s performance choices, vocal styles and the “Tune” slider found in the “Property” menu. Turning the “Tune” slider up flattens the pitch out and down amplifies the natural proclivities of the vocalist you’re working with.
Vibrato.

Utilising VoiSona’s unique vibrato parameter makes adding and adjusting vibrato simple. In “Simplified” mode, draw a line where you would like to place vibrato and then click and drag to adjust the amplitude and frequency. In “Detailed” mode, frequency and amplitude are displayed in a split screen where you can draw lines to affect the levels individually.
Alpha.

Available as both an overall slider and an editable parameter, this is for adjusting the formant of a voice. Turning it down results in a younger-sounding voice and turning it up results in a more mature-sounding voice.
Huskiness.

Available as both an overall slider and an editable parameter, this is for huskiness of a voice. Turning it up results in a huskier voice and turning it down removes huskiness from the voice.
:: Score Editing & Articulations.
Score Editing.
Before beginning any major editing, setting up your score is paramount to ensuring you’re working with generations that suit your tastes. Tempo and time signature (labelled “Beat”) are expected, but the other two are uniquely positioned to set your vocalist up for ideal results.

“Key” is for the key signature of the piece, but can also be used as a way to generate a different performance from your vocalist. Choosing the correct key for your piece helps lead to more natural results with no additional editing.

“Dynamics” are for the dynamic markings used throughout a piece. Ranging from pppp (pianissississimo) to ffff (fortissississimo), these generate a different level of volume and strength with no additional editing.
Articulations.
VoiSona also has additional articulations that mirror traditional musical notation for simple adjustment to the performance of a vocalist. These are available on every vocalist.

“Accent” on a note creates an emphases typically reflected as a stronger performance, even at the same “Dynamic” range.

“Staccato” on a note creates a sudden stop, even between connected notes. It is different from a glottal stop.

“Breath” on a note induces a quick, sharp inhale at the end of the note, even between connected notes.

“Slur” on a phrase of notes creates a legato sound, this is most effective for smoothing short phrases.
Additionally, every vocalist has “Singing Expressions”, which are articulations based around a vocalist’s quirks. Every voice library has “Falsetto” as an expression which acts as a swap to falsetto or head voice based on the vocalist.
:: English Lyric Input.
Basic Phonetics.
Entering lyrics and pressing play to hear them sung back to you is very simple in VoiSona, as the dictionary built into each voice library auto-converts words into the appropriate phonemes automatically. Once lyrics have been applied to a note, the bulk of the note will contain the lyric and the phonemes will appear above them. Double clicking the phonemes will allow editing without changing the lyric on the note.

Sometimes making a phoneme adjustment is the correct approach to getting your desired result, such as an accent change or an emphases adjustment. VoiSona uses the ARPABET phonetic system for English, and familiarising yourself with it’s intricacies can make editing much faster.
| Phoneme | Example |
|---|---|
| aa | palm |
| ae | man |
| ax | about |
| axr | verse |

Advanced Phonetics.
VoiSona’s English dictionary is context sensitive and contains additional phonetics for minor changes in performance through manual editing. For example, stress information for words is included in the basic dictionary and can be edited to change which syllable of a word is emphasised.
| Phoneme | Explanation |
|---|---|
| *~ | Primary stress (strongest emphasis). |
| * | Secondary stress (slight emphasis). |
| , | Separates phonemes. |
| | | Separates syllables inside of a single note. |
| cl | Glottal stop (on supported voices). |
Lyric Input.
By default, VoiSona auto splits English lyrics across multiple notes so lyric input is very simple. You can type directly into the notes or utilise the “Batch lyric entry” panel. By default, the dictionary uses phonetics to naturally blend words together but you can turn this feature off by selecting the notes, turn “Auto Split English Lyrics” off and add [/] to the end of the first word in the phrase.
| Input | Explanation |
|---|---|
| – | Melisma note, carries last phoneme to the next note. |
| ‘ | Drops last vowel in note with at least one vowel (Japanese only) |
| / | Removes liaison (requires “Auto Split English Lyrics” to be off). |
:: Tips & Tricks.
Basic Tips.
- Take advantage of shortcuts for tools and parameter views to make your workflow smoother.
| Shortcut | Keys |
|---|---|
| Edit Score | [1] |
| Edit Timing | [2] |
| Edit Volume | [3] |
| Edit Pitch | [4] |
| Edit Vibrato | [5] |
| Edit Alpha | [6] |
| Edit Huskiness | [7] |
| Shortcut | Keys |
|---|---|
| Selection Tool | [CTRL] + [1] |
| Bulk Selection Tool | [CTRL] + [2] |
| Draw Tool | [CTRL] + [3] |
| Line Tool | [CTRL] + [4] |
| Eraser Tool | [CTRL] + [5] |
| Split and Join Tool | [CTRL] + [6] |
- Utilise the “Bulk Selection Tool” for copying everything including all drawn adjustments made on the parameters.

- Next to the “Eraser” tool is the “Split and Join Tool”, this can be used as both a note cutting and re-joining tool.

- VoiSona has both horizontal and vertical zoom options, utilise vertical zoom especially to make drawing easier to work with. Scroll with [CTRL] for vertical zoom and with [CTRL] + [Shift] for horizontal zoom.

- To swap the score editing mode to dark mode, go to “Edit→Preferences→Editor→Piano Roll Background→Score Edit Screen” and change it to “Simple”.

Advanced Tricks.
- While using the “Eraser Tool” on the “Pitch” parameter, hold down [Shift] and draw to turn the purple pitch lines white. This creates an unvoiced effect, which can be combined with “Huskiness” to create an approximated scream effect.

- On any parameter view, use the “Selection Tool” to highlight the desired notes and click + drag to change the generated parameter lines to user drawn ones. This can be used to lock in a performance choice you like or do quick pitch correction without drawing an entirely new line.

- When importing a file from another program, multisyllabic lyrics don’t always load correctly. Select a note, then press [Tab] to autofill the lyrics into VoiSona’s splitting method.
